RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Training with Blue Oyster Sailing in 2016. Pavol from Slovakia pictured right and Stephen from Australia both successfully completed their RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Assessments along with Fedor from Russia with BOS last week. Well done from all the training team at both Gibraltar and Barcelona bases. Both Pavol and Stephen spent time at our Gibraltar base completing all of their tidal training aboard our Beneteau Oceanis 473 SY Dogstar.  We have plenty of Mile Building and Tidal Training opportunities at our base in Queensway Quay Gibraltar and we also run a full program of RYA Training all year. SY Dogstar with Instructor Leonardo have just returned this weekend from a 600 mile passage between Gibraltar Melilla and Almeria. News on that passage will be published soon!

Blue Oyster Mile Builders Charles Will Stephen

Blue Oyster Sailing run many Mile Building and Adventure Sailing passages from all Barcelona bases and Gibraltar. BOS routes vary but from Queensway Quay Gibraltar we sail to Morocco, Atlantic Ports of Spain and Portugal and for RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Passages to the Canary Islands. From Barcelona Port Olimpic, L'Escala and our Palamos Charter Base we make passages within the Mediterranean and as far as Gibraltar. Passages are confirmed as soon as the first booking is received - and on a first come first served basis. Confirmed passages at this time are:

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Student Duncan Pell. I’d no idea what to expect when I set off for Spain. I booked my place in February 2015 when it seemed a great idea and an impressive project to tell friends about. But then came reality, it was summer and I was in Barcelona to start fifteen weeks of Fast Track Yachtmaster Training. With very little experience of sailing, I was nervous about the challenges ahead and whether I could tolerate all that time living on boats - I wondered what the instructors, students, food, cabins, weather and exams would be like.

            Well, in short, it was brilliant fun. Definitely challenging but very rewarding. The sense of triumph when the examiner shook my hand and congratulated me on passing, was fantastic. But it wasn’t just my achievement and I’m very grateful to many other people. Particularly to the patient, friendly and encouraging Blue Oyster instructors - Mark, Susie, Charlie and Oliver. Then there’s all the students who helped make life aboard so enjoyable.    

            I sailed over 4000 nautical miles with Blue Oyster visiting the Balearics, Gibraltar, North Africa and many Spanish ports. I sailed on seven boats and met about sixty students of different ages and backgrounds. Would I do it again? It’s an emphatic ‘yes’

Congratulations to the above students who all successfully passed their RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Assessments with us this month. All are now able to work in the Industry with commercially endorsed qualifications. The 14 and 15 week courses include all the training required to successfully Skipper a Yacht Power or Sail (dependent on course option) up to 200 gross tons. Fabiano joined us from Brazil, Duncan from The UAE, Matt Harry and George from UK. A tremendous effort by all involved enjoy your Christmas break chaps. Thanks. I cannot express how grateful and appreciative I am for everything you've done for me. You've taught me a tremendous amount of things about sailing, management and life in general. I came expecting to become a sailor and quickly realised all the experiences I have endured have helped me to become a better person. And for that, I thank you! You run an incredible sailing school! I think your advantage over other sailing schools is the quaility of instruction(all the instructors truly care about the advancement of students) and the close -knit family feel. I know sometimes you think it would be great to have more boats and skippers but being taught by a few similar styled instructors provides many benefits, such as consistency. Over all I just wanted to let you know I currently think the world of your school and style of program you provide. I couldn't have imagined having a better 3 month sailing experience! Blue Oyster Gibraltar RYA Annual Inspection Completed - Well Done Bravo Zulu (BZ) from RYA Inspector Mike Dymond.

The Blue Oyster Sailing Gibraltar RYA Inspection was successfully completed on 27 May 2015. The photo shows Sailing Yacht Dogstar our Beneteau Oceanis 473 arriving in Sotogrande. Gibraltar provides a spectacular back drop behind her.

RYA Inspector Mike Dymond completed the RYA Centre Inspection and his comments were forwarded to RYA in the UK. "Very good Inspection" he wrote. Mike ended his Inspection Report with the term BZ or Brava Zulu. The expression caught us all on the hop.

For those of you who are looking up BZ it is an old Naval expression for Well Done! Thumbs up for all the students on board and BZ to all involved in the Annual RYA Inspection.

I know it has been a while since I took my Day Skipper course with BOS this summer, but I wanted to take some time to write to your company and say thank you very much.

It was an extremely rewarding course and Oliver was a fantastic instructor.  I feel that I learnt an enormous amount in the 6 days I was on the boat, both from Oliver and the other participants (Matthias & David).  Oliver was a tough boss, but it is just the way I like it.  No messing around - "please" and "thank you"  don't have a place on a boat when rounding Europa Point in F5-6 or tackling a high speed ferry at 3 AM in Gibraltar Bay or when you're helming an 18 tonne lump of GRP towards a $5 million dollar super-yacht.  It was like 'Boot Camp' with an incredible feeling of accomplishment when finished.  Oliver was also great fun while we were relaxing and he was a wealth of knowledge and information to help us in our future sailing careers.

Blue Oyster RYA Competent Crew Course Queensway Quay Gibraltar April 2014

Hi Susie. Well we had a great time on the course. 12th April 2014 Oliver was a fantastic instructor and we both feel we got a great deal out of the course. He also went out of his way to help organise a wee side trip to Tetouan when we were in Morocco which was, as Mo described it, a 'life experience' for her. He also introduced us to stewed octopus on our last night which was a first for me (though sadly too exotic for Mo!). However, she did go all out for the Shisha bar visit in Ceuta where it was me that proved the lightweight preferring my bunk to a 3am session. We were really lucky with the weather with sunny conditions in Gibraltar, though a bit cooler (to our surprise) in Morocco winds were moderate with only one exciting spell where it got up to F6 coming out of Ceuta.
